Arivaca's townsite was originally a Pima Indian village. Mining operations in the area began in 1856 and when the mines played out, ranching took over. Today, Arivaca is considered a small ranch town and a semi-ghost town. Many old historic buildings are still standing and the cemetery is worth seeing.

It is close to one of the units of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, and birdwatching is a popular attraction.

Arivaca is 24 miles from Arivaca Junction on I-19, between Tucson and Nogales, Arizona.
