This district is named after the city of Ranchi. Ranchi is situated at 676 meter (2140 ft.) above the sea level. Ranchi is the capital of newly formed state Jharkhand. It is situated about 338 km. far from Patna, the capital of Bihar. Ranchi is known as the "city of waterfall" due to the number of waterfalls near the city.
