(1923-1998). In his early years he played jazz piano with the Benny Goodman and Glen Miller bands. He studied composition with Paul Hindemith at Yale. One of the founders of the California Institute of the Arts, he was the first dean of the music division. Among his many awards is the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Duplicates: A Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra.
