Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by a specific bacterium. When cattle or sheep eat these spores from the soil, they get anthrax. People who work with the sick animals, their leather, or wool can get it, too.

There are three ways that people get anthrax: when the spores get into a cut in the skin, when the spores get into their food, or when the spores are inhaled.

Doctors have several medicines that can kill anthrax, when it is found right away. A vaccine that protects against this disease is given to the military and other people who may be at risk in their jobs.
